Protected areas > Khlong Wang Chao National Park

Numerous waterfall, hot springs and caves are the main drawing points of this national park on the northern-most tip of the Western Forest Complex.

History

Khlong Wang Chao was founded on August 29, 1990 after 2-year survey of the area of Khlong Wang Chao and Khlong Suan Mak forests.

Geography

Most of the area consists of mountains lying along the north and south and there is a plain area in their middle. The important mountain ranges are Yen mountain, Tao Dam mountain, Tad Roop Kai mountain and others. The park stretches from about 300 m to the Yen mountain, the highest peak at 1898 m above the sea level.

Climate

There are 3 seasons here which are influenced by the south-western monsoon wind: hot summer from February to May, raining season from June to November and winter in December and January.

Flora and Fauna

The park comprises of mixed deciduous, hill evergreen, dry evergreen, dipterocarp and pine forests. Wildlife in the park includes elephant, sambar deer, bear, many species of birds.

What to See

Khao Panang Cave
- this 100 m long cave full of stalactites and stalagmites is situated near Khlong Suan Mak

Khlong Samo Kluay Waterfall - a middle size waterfall with 5 levels of which the first one drops some 40 meters. Located 800 meters from the headquaters.

Khlong Wang Chao Waterfall - the water of this waterfall drops over 60 meters high cliff to the pool below. Situated on km 29 of Wang Chao - Lo Ko road.

Tao Dam Waterfall - a 3-tier waterfall, each tier being 200 m high

Hot Well - here warm water with average temperature of 50-70 C erupts from the earth face. Located 1.5 km from Tao Dam.

Tham Thep Pha Nom - these huge caves are inhabited by hundreds of bats

Facilities

Headquarters - accommodation, restaurant, visitors center, parking

Accommodation

Bungalows with fan sleeping up to 8 people are located at the headquarters. Camping site with tents rental also available at the headquarters.

Transport

By car off highway 1 in the Kamphaeng Phet province.
